SOUTH BEND - Frank D. Bogunia Sr., 85, passed away at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, in his residence. Frank was born on September 15, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Valentine and Victoria (Szymak) Bogunia. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters. On July 20, 1946, in South Bend, Frank married the former Helen Ewald, who survives. He is also survived by daughters, Victoria (Irvin) Kaufman of Nappanee, Joyce (Ronald) Schramski of Lakeville, Judith (Gordon) Rowe of South Bend and Rhonda (David) Maciejewski of Peru; sons, Frank (Bev) Bogunia Jr. of South Bend and Daniel (Nina) Bogunia of South Bend; 14 grandchildren, Nicole, Jeanne, Bill, Angie, Kevin, Kristi, Bradley, Jessica, Michael, Jon, Gary, Steve, Tracy and Ashley; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Adeline Medich of South Bend. Frank worked at Studebaker for 23 years, and then at Wheel Horse in yard maintenance from which he retired after 23 years. He served with the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church and KofC #553. Frank loved fishing, bowling and camping with his family at Lake of the Woods for many years. He loved playing fast-pitch softball. Frank played up to the age of 69. He helped many teams win tournaments and won a state championship in 1987. Frank had a passion for sports. He taught his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews how to play ball. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
