Lucille M. Gasko
July 27, 1920 - July 26, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Lucille M. Gasko, 94, of South Bend, passed away on Sunday July 26, 2015 at Hospice House, South Bend. She was born on July 27, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Charles, Sr. and Stella (Kalamaja) Maternowski. She graduated from South Bend Catholic High School in 1938. On November 25, 1948 she married Benjamin S. Gasko, who preceded her in death on November 9, 2008. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Esther Kromkowski and two brothers, John and Charles Maternowski. Lucille is survived by her daughters, Mira Gasko of South Bend and Valerie (John) Gaylor of Carmel, IN; her son, Dr. Michael (Nancy) Gasko of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Gasko, Angela (Dr. Phil) Hartwell, Kathleen (Kevin) Poe, Joseph (Lynsey) Gaylor, J.D. Gaylor, Jennifer and Julie Gaylor; eight great-grandchildren, Drew, Megan and Logan Hartwell, Hannah and Ethan Poe, Lily and Abby Gasko and Shelby Botkin; a sister, Marie Czarnecki of South Bend; and a brother, Dr. Chester Maternowski of Grand Rapids, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gasko was a parishioner of St. Casimir Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Lucy was very active with her children when they were growing up (Class Mom, PTO President and Den Mother). She then went to work and retired several times from many clothing establishments in town (Robertson's, Wyman's, Gilbert's, Newman's and Abigail's). She always enjoyed dressing up and had a great sense of style. She was very proud of her children and their accomplishments in life, but continued to worry about them none the less. She was a woman of faith and prayed to the Holy Spirit nightly to keep all of her loved ones safe. Although she wasn't that fond of water, she enjoyed going to Diamond Lake and spending time with her family. Mom was "kindly assertive". When mom said no she meant no and there was no getting her to change her mind. Special thanks to Center for Hospice Care for supporting the family so that she could remain at home and to everyone that helped with her 24 hour care. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday July 31, 2015 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday August 1, 2015, at St. Casimir Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir Church, 1308 Dunham St., South Bend, 46619 or to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545-5234.
