SOUTH BEND - John J. Maternowski, 93, passed away Friday. He is survived by 3 sons, Paul (Cheryl), Christopher (Margaret) & John (J.T.) (Michele) Maternowski, daughter Susan (John) Sommer, brother Dr. Chester (Elaine) Maternowski, sisters Lucille Gasko & Marie Czarnecki, 6 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren. Visitation is 2-8 pm Wednesday at ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm Thursday in St. Casmir Catholic Church.

SOUTH BEND - John J. Maternowski, 93, passed away at 1:05 am on Friday, December 30, 2011 in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. John was born February 10, 1918 in South Bend, to the late Charles and Stella (Kalamaja) Maternowski. In 1945, John married Dorothy (Ziolkowski) and she passed away in 1998. John was also preceded in death by a brother, Charlie; and sister, Esther Kromkowski. He is survived by three sons, Paul (Cheryl) Maternowski of Marion, IA, Christopher (Margaret) Maternowski of Wake Forest, NC, and John (J.T.) (Michele) Maternowski of Mishawaka, IN; daughter, Susan (John) Sommer of Wake Forest, N.C; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Chester (Elaine) Maternowski of Grand Rapids, MI; and sisters, Lucille Gasko of South Bend, IN, and Marie Czarnecki of South Bend. IN. John honorably served his county in the United States Army. He was the owner of the Maternowski's Meat Market in South Bend for 49 years, and a member of the Butchers and Groceries Association. John was the oldest living member of M.R. Falcons and shared great stories about the many bowling trips he took including the time the team met Jack Dempsey. He was a parishioner of St. Casmir Catholic Church to which he was very devoted, and was the president of the parish Ushers Club. John loved to cook and his recipes could not be duplicated. John always said, "The food isn't bad if you're hungry". He enjoyed all sports including Notre Dame Sports and the Chicago White Sox. Visitation for John will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2012 in St. Casmir Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
