On Aug. 4, 1905, Rev. J. M. Scherer, C. S. C., pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, married Helen Schaden, neƩ Etl, born in Frauenkirchen, Hungary to Michael and Maria Ungarn Etl, and Alexander Illi (sic), born in Baumhagen, Hungary to Gaspar & Caroline Kreizitch Illi (sic). (church and county marriage records) According to the 1910-1920 federal censuses of South Bend, Indiana, Helen and her son from her first marriage, Joseph Schaden, immigrated in 1905, the same year that she married Alexander Elli. Alexander Elli and his son from his first marriage, Stephen Elli, had immigrated the year before. The children of Helen and Alexander Elli included Anna, Alexander, Katherine, John, and Henry Elli.
South Bend News-Times, Thurs., Feb. 8, 1917, p. 4:
"Mrs. Helen Elo (sic), 43 years old, 1214 W. Indiana av., died at the Epworth hospital Wednesday. She is survived by her husband, Alexander, seven children, Stephen, Joseph, Anna, Alexander, John, Katherine and Henry; a brother, Michael Ettl; and a sister, Anna Popel, all of South Bend."
South Bend News-Times, Fri., Feb. 9, 1917, p. 4:
"The funeral of Mrs. Helen Elo (sic), 1214 W. Indiana av., who died Wednesday, was held Friday morning at the St. Mary's German Catholic church, Rev. Joseph M. Scherer officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery."
