SOUTH BEND - Robert C. Niezgodski, 78, of South Bend, IN, passed away following a brief illness at 10:49 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2007, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, IN. He was born on February 1, 1929, to the late Clem and Helen (Slomski) Niezgodski in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents, one sister, Patricia Niezgodski, and one brother, Cornelius Niezgodski, also preceded him in death. Mr. Niezgodski retired in February 1991 from the City of South Bend Department of Public Parks Department after 20 years of employment. Robert was also a precinct committeeman for 25 years, and ran for City Council in 1971. He was a 1947 graduate of Central High School. On June 19, 1954, he married Bernice C. Manijak at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. She survives. Along with his loving wife, Bernice of 53 years, he is survived by one daughter, Debbie (Mark) Hudgens of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Mark (Jeanette) Niezgodski of Beavercreek, OH, and Patrick Niezgodski of Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, Zachary and Meagan Niezgodski, both of Beavercreek, OH, and Helen Hudgens of Atlanta, GA; one step-granddaughter, Stacie Schrader of New Carlisle, IN; and one sister-in-law, Mary "Mike" Niezgodski of South Bend, IN. Mr. Niezgodski was a member of St. Stanislaus parish in South Bend, where he was a former usher at the church. He was also a member of American Legion Post #357, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 8748, a social member of Disabled American Veterans White Eagle Chapter #39, and was a member of the Achievement Forum where he received the Achiever of the Year Award in 1987. Robert was a U.S. Army veteran. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1953 after two years of service, having spent most of his time in Germany. Robert enjoyed spending time fishing for bluegill. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today, March 2, 2007, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend, with Rev. Michael Mathews, C.S.C., officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by American Legion Post #357. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus & Holy Cross Renaissance Campaign, 920 Wilber Street, South Bend, IN 46628.
