Earl D. "Ikey" Shull Sr.
Jan. 9, 1931 - March 15, 2009

NILES - Earl D. "Ikey" Shull Sr., 78, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in a farmhouse in South Bend, IN, on January 9, 1931, to the late Elsie Baggs, but was raised by his loving grandmother and aunt, along with his eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sisters, June (Pat) Trigg of Aurora, MO, and Laurel Liston of DeKalb, IL. On September 26, 1953, he was joined in matrimony to the former Gertrude Napieralski, who survives. To this union eight children were born. Then on October 15, 1994, in Wax, Kentucky, he was united in marriage to Elaine "Tina" Hooley, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Roberta (David) Anderson of South Bend, Venita Smith of Mishawaka, Earl D. Shull Jr. of Billings, MT, Roger (Brenda) Shull of South Bend, George (Wendy) Shull of Mishawaka, Dorothee (Daniel) Rupert of Mishawaka, Silvie (Scott) Meuser of Rockford, MI, and Trudy Shull of Mishawaka. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Jason, Travis, Jonathan, Charlye, Linsey, Mandy, Ryan, Anthony and Nicole, along with many nieces and nephews. Mr. Shull retired as a staff sergeant with the United States Air Force in April 1974 following 22 years of faithful service to his country. He returned to South Bend by station wagon with his eight children, one cat and one German Shepherd. After settling in, he was hired at the Bendix Corp. where he worked as a steel inspector for 12 years, and retired from there in 1993. Our Dad loved his family. He had a heart of gold and would always try to help others. He enjoyed get-togethers, traveling, the outdoors, good food, and especially his sweets. Earl will fondly be remembered for his unique sense of humor. The family of Earl Shull wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful, loving staff of Blessed Home Care and the residents. Also special thanks to his medical team from Hospice at Home. Our father was so loved and cared for. Earl kept his strong spirit and overcame many obstacles, including leaving the medical professionals scratching their heads. He will be sadly missed by all. Private services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 19th, in South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 18th, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that all contributions in memory of Earl D. Shull Sr. be made to Blessed Home Care, 1217 State Line Road, Niles, MI 49120; or to Hospice at Home, 4017 Chamberlain Road, Buchanan, MI 49107.
