Mary (Maria) Janczycki, was born in Trzciana, Rzeszow, Galicia (Poland). Her parents were Szymon Janczycki and Jadwiga Kozubal. It is said that Mary attended St. Lawrence Church in Trzciana, Rzeszow, Poland. She worked for Jewish families and Catholic rectories located mostly in the Czech region of Austria Hungary where Mary learned the Czech language. It appears that Mary lived in present day Ostrava-Michalkovice, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic before she immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland on 31 October 1907. She married John Kwasny less than 4 weeks later. It has been said that this might have been a "mail-order" bride arrangement, but this is not substantiated. Mary is remembered for bootlegging, using the family bathtub; this was probably about 1935. She was an active vegetable and flower gardener, a creative and resourceful cook, and an avid reader.
