Charles E. "Chuck" Klein, 77, of South Bend, IN, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN, following a brief illness. Chuck was born on November 7, 1938 to the late Clarence J. and Helen L. (Glesmer) Klein in Mishawaka, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with his parents; he was also preceded in death by a sister, Karen (Klein) Eckstein.Chuck graduated in 1957 from St. Joseph High School, and then served in the United States Army from 1957- 1960. Chuck retired in 2004 from the University of Notre Dame, where he worked for 15 years as a Machinist / Technician for the School of Aerospace and Engineering. Prior to that, he was employed at Wheelabrator - Frye in Mishawaka, IN for 24 years.On April 20, 1963, he married Shirley A. Hojnacki at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. Chuck is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Klein of South Bend, IN; two sons, Mark E. (Mary) Klein of Indianapolis, IN; Brian T. (Pam) Klein of Fort Wayne, IN; six grandchildren, Andrew, Meghan, Katie, and Annie Klein, all of Indianapolis, IN; Maddy and Jack Klein, both of Fort Wayne, IN; two sisters, Barbara (Bennie) Davis of Mishawaka, IN; Suzanne Klein of South Bend, IN; and three brothers, Michael Klein of Texas; Christopher Klein of Mishawaka, IN; and Patrick Klein of Texas.Chuck was a current member of Holy Family Parish; and a former member of St. Casimir Parish, where he served as past Vice President of the Married Men's Club. Chuck thoroughly enjoyed working in his yard, traveling with his family and friends, camping, watching war movies, spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities. His many hobbies and interests included golfing, bowling, working crossword puzzles, wood working and playing games on the iPad. He was a self taught handyman who could fix practically anything. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where the St. Casimir Married Men's Club will recite a rosary at 4:00 p.m.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Glenn Kohrman officiating. Interment will follow at a later date.
