[N28404] Gerald “Jerry” H. Ornat
Oct. 10, 1946 - Apr. 19, 2021

SOUTH BEND - Gerald “Jerry” Ornat, 74, passed away on April 19, 2021 at Saint Joseph Health System, Mishawaka Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born October 10, 1946 in South Bend to Helen (Nowacki) and Harry Ornat. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald, who passed away as a young child. Jerry attended St. Adalbert's for elementary school and St. Joseph's High School in South Bend. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany for two years. When he returned, he met Brenda Jane Lingar at a dance and they married in 1970. They had three daughters and celebrated 50 years of marriage in October 2020. Jerry was employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Northern Indiana for 44 years, retiring in 2009. This created a lifetime love of Coca-Cola products for the entire family. After retirement, he worked part-time at the Salvation Army store in South Bend, where he loved talking with customers and his co-workers. He enjoyed the Wednesday morning breakfasts with a group of Coca-Cola retirees, where they would “shoot the breeze” and enjoy their friendship. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox and Notre Dame, especially football and hockey. He loved to listen to games on the radio or watch them on TV, attend in person when possible and discuss the games with anyone who would listen. He was an easy-going guy who loved his family, worked hard and enjoyed good food like Polish dinners, Barnaby's pizza and eating potato chips while driving. Jerry is survived by his wife Brenda and three daughters Kim (Bob) Sult, Kelly and Katie (Jason Wyllie) Ornat. He is missed by his grandchildren Tyler (Ariella) and Kalie Sult; Lydia, Simon and Maddy Sweeney; Elizabeth Kater and Abigail Wyllie. He also has three great-grandchildren, with two more on the way this year. Jerry loved his wife, and he loved his girls, but he absolutely loved being Papa to all the grandkids. Whether attending their sporting events or school programs, or taking them to a Notre Dame hockey game, hanging with the grandkids was the highlight of his life. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. The family will be celebrating his life on Saturday, April 24 from 4-7pm at Palmer Funeral Home- Bubb Chapel, 3910 N Main St., Mishawaka 46545. Following Covid-19 guidelines, masks will be required by visitors at all times. If you are able to join us, please wear something with Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox or Notre Dame on it. Please, no flowers. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jerry's name to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 N. Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46545 or visit www.humanesocietystjc.org or to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation at www.myasthenia.org.
