SOUTH BEND - Helen P. Ornat, 90, passed away peacefully at 2:55pm on Saturday, January 28, 2012 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Helen was born July 22, 1921 in South Bend to the late Frank and Blanche Nowacki. Helen married Harry C. Ornat on April 21, 1945 in St. Adalbert Catholic Church who preceded her in death on November 6, 1983. She is also preceded in death by son, Donald Ornat; sisters, Clemetine Locsi and Verna Kopczynski; and brothers, Ed, Alex, John and Elgin Nowacki. Helen is survived by a son, Jerry (Brenda) Ornat of South Bend; grandchildren, Kim (Bob) Sult of Mishawaka, Kelly Ornat and Katie Ornat both of South Bend; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kalie Sult, Lydia, Simon, Madylin Sweeney, Elizabeth Kater and Abigal Wyllie; and sister Leona Bentkowski of South Bend. Helen was a strong woman who believed that family always came first. She always made it a priority to take care of Jerry and his family. She loved cooking Polish food and baking pies. She enjoyed taking care of her house and tending to a small garden in her backyard. Her faithful companion for many years was her small dog, Tiger, who went with her everywhere. Visitation will be from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Thursday, February 2, 2012 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME 824 S. Mayflower Rd. where a Funeral Liturgy will begin at 1:00pm in. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be made to The Foundation of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, 837 E. Cedar St, Suite 350, South Bend, IN 46617, or the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Rd, Mishawaka, IN. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net
