ELKHART - Larry A. Kasa, 76, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday evening, June 1st, at the Elkhart Hospice House. He was born Sept. 7, 1939, in South Bend, to Louis and Esther (Winther) Kasa. He married Marie Joines on June 27, 1964. Surviving are a son, Phillip L. Kasa of Elkhart; 6 grandchildren, Jessica, Brock, Janessa, Ben, Kasey and Bailey; a sister, Katherine Steinbarger of San Angelo, TX; a brother, Jim (Sheba) Kasa of South Bend; many nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Janet Arnold of Elkhart; and his dog, Buffi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; a son, Michael Kasa; a brother, Kenneth Kasa; and his parents.Larry graduated from South Bend Central High School and served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. He served with the Elkhart Police Department from 1972-2008, serving as Chief of Police under the David Miller Administration. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and the F.O.P #52. Larry was an avid golfer and was a member of Raber Golf Course. A gathering of family and friends will be Friday, June 3rd, from 4-7 pm at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be Saturday, June 4th, at 9 am, also at the funeral home. Rev. John Hogsett will officiate. Private interment with military honors will be at Rice Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Center for Hospice Care or United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.The family would like to thank the staff of the Elkhart Hospice House for their wonderful care of Larry.
