Granger-Richard Leon Huyvaert passed away at home on Thursday, June 21, 2018. Richard was born on July 17, 1946 to Leon and Julia (Poczik)Huyvaert. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1964 and on September 23, 1967 he married his love and best friend, Brenda Barrier. Together they had three great and loving sons, Richard Jr, Jeffrey (Jennifer) and Michael. He leaves three grandkids that knew him as “Poppy”. Richard was a diesel mechanic for 35 years. He retired at 57 and enjoyed every day of it.
Richard loved all kinds of sports. He played baseball and football as a boy. Later he totally enjoyed watching his sons and then his grandkids play a variety of sports. He was a huge Notre Dame fan. He was also a Yankees fan, When asked why New York, he said as a kid his favorite player was Mickey Mantle, so it just stuck. He rooted for the Cubs too. T his leisure time he enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening (he was known in the family as “the Pickle King”. His favorite moments were spent traveling. A very much loved and special person is gone.
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal- love leaves a memory no one can steal”. Thanks to the team of doctors, nurses and techs at St. Joseph Medical Center. A special thanks to Lynn and Connie.
