SOUTH BEND - Curtis B. Thews, 90, passed away at 10:30 am Friday, June 21, 2013, in the Hospice House. Curtis was born October 6, 1922, in Fair Oaks, IN, to the late Earl and Zelah (Wiseman) Thews. Curtis was also preceded in death by a brother, Russell Thews. On August 15, 1965, Curtis married Josephine (Chrapliwy) Thews. She survives along with a son, Michael J. (Kathleen) Nemes of South Bend; grandson, Timothy Nemes of South Bend; granddaughter, Sara Nielson of New Carlisle; and great-grandchildren, Evan Moore, fraternal twins, Ethan and Allison, Spencer and Emily Nielson. Curtis is also survived by step-grandchildren, Robert and Bradley Raker, Laura Cihak and their families. Curtis honorably served his country in the United States Navy during WW II on the battleship, the USS West Virginia, as Fireman, 1st Class Machinist Mate. In 1941 Curtis moved to South Bend from Virgie, IN. He was employed with the Bendix and Oliver and Studebaker Corporations. In 1955 Curtis started the first Volkswagen/Porsche dealership in South Bend and Elkhart with his mother and brother. He was a member of St. Mary National Catholic Church. Curtis was an avid sports car enthusiast, built many sport racing cars, and was a lifetime and oldest member of the Sports Car Club of America. He spent his time volunteering for the Studebaker Museum, and enjoyed watching auto racing and the Cubs. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. is assisting the family. The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Hospice, the VA, and caregivers for their exceptional care.
