On March 17, 1903, Maria Hoffer, 29, and three children, Etelka, 6, Marton, 3, and Geza, 2, all from Babot, Hungary, arrived at the port of New York aboard the S. S. Vaderland. Maria was on her way to join her husband, Geza Hoffer, living in South Bend, Indiana. (Ellis Island passenger lists)

Two years later, on March 27, 1905, Maria Szakal Hoffer died in South Bend and was interred in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
