nee Gadowski
June 13, 1918 - September 29, 2021

Wheaton - Gertrude Vargyas, 103, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021 in Wheaton, IL. Gertrude was born June 13, 1918, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late George and Martha (Kubacki) Gadowski. She graduated with honors from Washington High School, where she was editor of the school paper. After graduation, she worked at South Bend’s Empire Boxboard Corporation, where she met Frank Vargyas. In 1940 the couple married and raised two sons, Paul and Daryl. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and son Daryl, as well as sisters Lucille Barczykowski, Mildred Kobylarek, and Eleanor Tyler, all of South Bend. Gertrude also worked at Wells Electronics until her retirement at age 67, and then worked part-time as a food demonstrator at Meijer until she was 85. Although she moved to Wheaton, Illinois, in 2014 to be near her family, Gertrude remained a loyal and dedicated Notre Dame football fan and a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Left to cherish the memory of Gertrude are her son, Paul Vargyas of Oak Brook, IL, grandchildren Brian (Eva) Vargyas of Naperville, IL, and Valerie (David) Southworth of Wheaton, IL, great-grandchildren Cecilia Vargyas and Julia Southworth, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation for Gertrude will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday, October 4, 2021 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
