NILES, MI - In life, Alice Domine was a force to be reckoned with. In death, she will be remembered and live on in the hearts that she touched. Alice Domine passed away on September 18, 2018, at home in Niles, MI. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Douglas Domine, Sr.; two children, Deborah of Elkhart, IN and Douglas Jr. of Traverse City, MI, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and four beloved siblings. Alice was born on October 15, 1934, in Kalamazoo, MI to Dale and Gladys Norman. She was one of the thousands of children affected by the polio epidemic. Her older sister Barbara tells the story that Alice, at age five, demanded to be taken home from the hospital. Her “in-charge” attitude helped her fight through a debilitating illness at five and set the tone for the in-charge attitude she displayed for the rest of her life. In November of 1953 she married the love of her life, Douglas Domine, and they lived their adventure together. Both are graduates of Western Michigan University, where Alice earned her RN Magna Cum Laude in 1980. Alice worked at Lakeland Hospital (Pawating) in Niles, then cared for dying patients as a Hospice nurse through the Berrien County Cancer Service, and later became the director of the organization. She took pride in her service to others in their time of need. She also enjoyed creating gardens that grew to be the envy of her neighborhood. She took pride in her family and passed her courage and determination on to her grandchildren, Jason Domine of Chicago, IL, Jasmine Droppers of Seattle, WA, Brian Domine of Traverse City, MI, Brooks Cashbaugh of New York City, Dylan Cashbaugh of Los Angeles, CA, and Jessica Parker of Jacksonville, NC. She will be missed by all who were touched by her caring hand and all who loved her. Alice fought Parkinson's disease for the last 22 years of her life. She finally lost her first battle. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Alice will be laid to rest at Mission Hills Memorial Garden.
