SOUTH BEND - Joseph L. Pianowski, 83, of Terrace Lane, died at 4:16 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Medical Center of an illness. Mr. Pianowski was the former owner of Oak Grove Market and Pine's Liquor, both of Mishawaka. He also was employed at King Jagiello Market. He was born Sept. 25, 1910, in South Bend and was a lifelong resident.
On April 26, 1941, in Wilmington, N.C., he married Elizabeth J. Wilkey. She survives with a daughter, Sandra J. Burns of South Bend; a son, Michael A. of Elkhart; five grandchildren; three sisters, Harriet Klawinski, Martha Wozniak and Alice Pluta, all of South Bend; and two brothers, Raymond Pianowski and Arthur Pine, both of South Bend. Mr. Pianowski was a member of Little Flower Church, St. Hedwig Holy Name Society, American Legion Pulaski Post 357 and M.R. Falcons Nest 4. He served on the St. Joseph High School Athletic Board and was a Special Olympics volunteer. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He attended Indiana University.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, where American Legion Pulaski Post will conduct military services. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a rosary will be at 4 p.m. and M.R. Falcons will conduct services at 3:30 p.m.
