SOUTH BEND - Betty Szymczyk died Thursday in Hospice House. Survivors include her husband, Thaddeus; daughter, Lynn (Steve) Warner; grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Warner; sisters, Joann (Stanley) Paskiet, Maryann Morozinski, Marie (John) Popielski, and Patricia (Larry) Robison; and brother, Jim Switalski. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 on Monday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, Mayflower Road, Rosary at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery. Contributions to Center for Hospice and Palliative Care or St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Condolences at www.sjfh.net.

Betty Lou Szymczyk

SOUTH BEND - Betty Lou Szymczyk, 70, passed away at 6:57 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, in Hospice House. Betty was born on November 10, 1938, in South Bend, to the late Ormand and Lottie (Kolczynski) Switalski. She was also preceded in death by a son, Thaddeus Frank Szymczyk Jr., who passed away on September 12, 1999. On November 7, 1959, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, South Bend, Betty married Thaddeus F. Szymczyk. He survives along with a daughter, Lynn (Steve) Warner of Anderson, IN; two grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Warner of Anderson, IN; sisters, Joann (Stanley) Paskiet of South Bend, Maryann Morozinski of South Bend, Marie (John) Popielski of South Bend and Patricia (Larry) Robison of South Bend; and a brother, Jim Switalski of Elkhart. In her early years, Betty was employed by Northern Indiana Children's Hospital as a nurses aide where she worked with special-needs children. She was one of the organizers of the Night Street Dance that helped build the children's train ride that circled Rum Village City Park. Betty later became a full-time homemaker who loved to bake, cook, and work on her lawn, garden and flowers. She enjoyed her two children and grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan. She was very happy when she learned to drive at the age of 62. She liked to do cross-stitch, and make crafts for her family and friends. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 13, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Visitation will also be from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home on Tuesday morning before the Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 2120 Huron St., South Bend, IN 46619.
