Paul A. Totten, 93, loving father, grandfather and friend, died Wednesday afternoon at his home in South Bend, doing what he loved - working in his yard and garden. He was born on March 10, 1919 to the late Arthur and Della Totten in Milltown, IN. On April 12, 1941 in St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Frenchtown, IN, Paul married Rose L. Applegate, who was the love of his life. She preceded him in death on March 10, 2007. Also preceding him were five siblings and an infant daughter, Anna E. Totten. Paul was a religious, strong and energetic man, who worked diligently all of his life. He served in the US Army/Air Force. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, the WW II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal of Honor. He worked in the rock quarries of Southern Indiana, and became a truck driver when the family moved to South Bend in 1952. Paul is survived by daughters, Pam Sibal and Arlene (Karl) Napper; sons, Charles (Kyong) Totten, Sam (Char) Totten and Ken Totten. He is also survived by grandchildren, Thomas (Joy) Totten, Lisa (Paul) Panozzo, Pauline (Jeff) Breedlove, Krys (Mark) Slepian, Eric (Crissy) Napper, Penny (Bud) Smith, Sami (Jeremy) Miller, Dale Redman, Andrew (Aislyn) Sechrist, Jennifer Sibal, William Sibal and Kevin Sibal; as well as nineteen great grandchildren. Paul will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and fantastic vegetable and flower gardens, which he so freely shared. Funeral services for Paul will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 17, 2012 in Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Carl Ray Totten, Paul's nephew, will officiate. Military graveside honors and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from noon until 2:00 pm Saturday in the funeral home prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be sent to the Totten family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
