SOUTH BEND - Stephen J. Kovach, 96, of South Bend, IN, passed away July 5th after a brief illness in Hospice House. He was born December 27, 1915, in South Bend, to Charles and Anna (Horvath) Kovach. On November 18, 1950, in South Bend, he married Rosalie Datena, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Villanueva of South Bend and Michaeleen (Jay) Conlee of Niles, MI; two sons, Mark (Jill) Kovach of Granger and Craig (Nancy) Kovach of Mishawaka; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Smith, Mariska (Mary) Horvath and Anna Menyhart; brothers, Louis and Charles Kovach; and daughter-in-law, Nancy A. Kovach. His family meant everything to him. Steve was quite the handy man and could fix anything. He formerly worked at Studebaker's for 27 years, and then retired as a self-employed carpet installer. He loved to fish, shoot billiards and bowl. He loved to watch sports of all kinds, was a self-taught musician, and loved to dance. Steve belonged to the SB Pigeon Club since 1936, were he won many trophies and plaques. He was also in the CCC and was a WW II vet (Germany), where he received two Bronze Stars. He loved his children & grandchildren with all his heart and was very proud of them all. He will be greatly missed. Dad, "We'll be careful." Visitation will be on Monday, July 9th, from 4-8 at the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Ave. Funeral services will be conducted on July 10th at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice. Zahoran Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
