SOUTH BEND - Alex Nyari, 90, passed away at 7:40 pm Tuesday, February 18, 2014, in his residence. Alex was born on October 8, 1923, in South Bend, to Louis and Katherine (Simon) Nyari. He was employed by Studebaker and Allied Products and served his country in the United States Army in World War II. Alex was an avid fisherman and bowler and loved the Chicago Cubs. On March 24, 1946, in Boston, MA, he married the former Rita Maloney. She died on February 15, 1999. Alex was also preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Colpitts and Katherine Dezamitz; and three brothers, Louis Nyari, William Nyari and Joseph Nyari. Surviving are four daughters, Kathleen (Ronald) Nowicki of South Bend, Linda (Charles Jennings) Nyari of Seattle, WA, Diane Nyari of Chicago, IL, and Mary Ellen (John) Thoma of Granger; 5 grandchildren, Ronald (Sue) Nowicki Jr., Laura Brugh, Michael (Leah) Thoma, Paul Thoma and Jacob Thoma; 3 great-grandchildren, Ryan Brugh, Michaela Brugh and Alexis Nowicki, and a soon to be fourth great-grandchild, Maddux Alexander Thoma; a brother, Edward (Valery) Nyari of South Bend; and other relatives, Dorothy Nyari and Helen Nyari, both South Bend, Patricia Nyari of Marquette, MI, Marion Houlihan and Joan (Jim) Hurley, both of South Boston, MA, and Kay Maloney of South Weymouth, MA. Funeral services will be celebrated at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 22, 2014, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 South Kemble Avenue. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice Care or Pet Refuge.
