Born in Garrett, IN, Russell enlisted in the National Guard on 6-4-1917, he was discharged on 8-5-1917 to re-enter regular Federal Service. He served in Paris, France in 9th Co. Aero Reg. Sqdn. and was discharged on 7-1-1919. Russell married Bessie Lucille Gillespie on 6-12-1920 by Rev. Stewart White, the license was signed by Noble County Clerk, J.M. Kitt. Bessie was the daughter of John E. and Emma D. (Hollibaugh) Gillespie, and was born on 12-10-1902. Russell was a machinist and retired from the Bendix Corporation, South Bend, IN in 1964. The family was resided in Kendaville, Garrett, Brimfield and South Bend, IN. They owned the property at 1123 E. Broadway, South Bend, which in 1992 was in the name of their daughter Mrs. William(Janice)Fields. Bessie died on 11-13-1973. Russell and Bessie are both buried in the Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
