MISHAWAKA -- Leah "Marie" Sandefur, 91, of E. Third St., died Thursday (April 23, 2009) in her home. Born Aug. 8, 1917, in Three Oaks, Mich., to Fred and Edith (Landry) Stanage, she married Cecil Sandefur on Aug. 21, 1937, in Mishawaka. He died May 22, 1995. Mrs. Sandefur is survived by two daughters, Connie (Jim) Boyle and Beverly "Kay" (Butch) Holderman, both of Mishawaka; four sons, Ernest "Fred" (Dee) Sandefur of Elkhart and Chester (Linda) Sandefur, Robert (Diana) Sandefur and Sheridan "Lucky" (Cheryl) Sandefur, all of Mishawaka; 39 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marguerite E. Hickman of Prospect, Tenn., Phyllis G. Wordinger of South Bend and Arvilla (Pat) Lancaster-Landreth of Hartsville, Tenn.; and one brother, Phillip Stanage of Frankewing, Tenn. She was preceded in death by one son, Hubert Sandefur; five daughters, Carolyn Mae Sandefur, Thelma England, Edith Marlene Wittner, Pearl Johnson and Gloria Dunn; four brothers, Richard, Dale, Robert and Kenneth Stanage; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.Mrs. Sandefur raised three of her grandchildren, Beverly Radanovich, Cecil Van Huffle and Larry (Tammy) Sandefur, with whom she lived. She never turned away anyone who was hungry.A graduate of St. Monica Catholic School, she worked for Clarks Laundry 13 years until it was bought out by Ziker Cleaners, and then she went to work for Crystals Laundry. She retired in 1970. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. Eighth St., Mishawaka. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Terry Fisher of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
