Clara Marie Kovach
Aug. 3, 1924 - July 3, 2016
SOUTH BEND - Clara M. Kovach, age 91, passed away peacefully at Hamilton Grove Nursing Home on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Born on August 3, 1924, in Senta, Yugoslavia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Thurzo and Maria Balogh Thurzo. Living in Europe through the challenging times following World War II, she and her husband, the late Frank Kovach, along with their young son, Akos, escaped Hungary to Salzburg, Austria. They spent two years in a displacement camp where their son, Attila, was born. Their young family was then sponsored by a family member living in South Bend to come to the United States and settled in South Bend in 1951. Their daughter, Clara, was born after they settled in the South Bend area. As a resident in South Bend she worked at South Bend Supply Company and later worked as an Executive Secretary at Wheelabrator-Frye where she retired. Not wanting to slow down, she then worked for her son at Blacksmith Distributing where she helped run the business office. In addition to her long career, she earned her GED and was most proud of earning her degree from Indiana University. She was a model, loved working in the yard, and was an amazing Hungarian cook who never passed up the opportunity to entertain. Throughout her life there was always a special place in her heart to help animals. She is survived by three children, Akos (and Nancy) Kovach of Niles, Michigan, Attila (and Melinda) Kovach of Sarasota, Florida, and Clara (and Jeff) Costello of Granger, Indiana. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hamilton Grove Nursing Home and their staff for the years of great care provided to Clara. Relatives and close friends are welcome to join at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00, Saturday, July 9th, where a Mass of Christian Burial which will celebrated at 10:00 a.m., with Father Bill Meininger officiating.
