SOUTH BEND - Eugene J. Szymczak, 84, passed away on Monday. He is survived by his wife, Alice Szymczyk; daughters, Christine (Ronald) Banaszak & Celine (Edward) Mohoney, and Colleen (Ebert) Lawrence; son, James (Rose) Szymczak. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm on Friday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Published in South Bend Tribune on March 22, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Eugene J. Szymczak, 84, passed away at 3:00 pm on Monday, March 19, 2012, in Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. Eugene was born November 3, 1927, to the late Casimer and Laura (Jaworski) Szymczak. Eugene graduated from Central High School in 1946. On July 3, 1948, Eugene married Alice Szymczyk in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, who survives. Eugene was also preceded in death by brothers, Roman, Chester, Walter and Richard Szymczak. Eugene is survived by daughters, Christine (Ronald) Banaszak and Celine (Edward) Mohoney, all of Granger, and Colleen (Ebert) Lawrence of South Bend; and son, James (Rose) Szymczak of New Carlisle; grandchildren, Brenton (Mara) Mohoney of Mishawaka, Stephanie Mohoney of Granger, Laura and Andrew Zack of South Bend; and step-grandchildren, Sabrina and Ebert W. (Melissa) Lawrence; and step-great-grandchildren, Alie and Ella. Eugene retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as an engineer, and was a member of Teamsters Union #364. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he was an usher for over 50 years. Eugene was a basketball coach and a Cub Scout leader, also at Holy Family. Eugene ushered at the Notre Dame football games for over 55 years and was an avid Notre Dame and Cubs fan. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 23, 2012, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 24, 2012, in Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
