SOUTH BEND - John F. Schmanski, 82, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 11:50 a.m., Thursday, February 13, 2014 in Memorial Hospital. John was born on October 19, 1931 in South Bend to John F. Schmanski, Sr. and Johanna (Kravontka) Schmanski, and was a lifelong resident. He retired in October 1993 from Miles Laboratories, where he was employed for 30 years as a Drafting Supervisor. On May 5, 1956, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, he married Frances A. Nave, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mary (Brad Niedbalski) Schmanski of South Bend, Indiana, Jennifer (Michael) Dolphin of Park Ridge, Illinois, and Amy (Charles) Crennell of Edwardsburg, Michigan; two sons, John (Carol) Schmanski of Mishawaka, Indiana and Joseph (Gloria) Schmanski of Osceola, Indiana; ten grandchildren, John Schmanski, Michael Schmanski, Kimberly Schmanski, Lou Dolphin, Zack Dolpin, Hanna Dolphin, Casey Crennell, Camron Crennell, Conor Crennell, and Robert Niedbalski; one step-daughter, Jennifer Reese; one great-granddaughter, Payton; one brother, Ronald (Carolyn) Schmanske of Elkhart, Indiana; and one brother-in-law, Robert McNerney of South Bend, Indiana. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Johanna Schmanski; and one sister, Dorothy McNerney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2013 in Corpus Christi Church. Friends may call from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. John was a 1950 graduate of South Bend Central High School. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Army. John was a longtime member of Corpus Christi Parish where he had been an usher and an active member of the Athletic Association. John enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren at the family lake cottage. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Church.
