SOUTH BEND - Helen V. Czajkowski, 77, of Elmer Street, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mrs. Czajkowski was a former employee of Carlyle Heathcare Center. She was born July 31, 1916, in East Chicago, Ind., and lived in South Bend most of her life. On Feb. 22, 1936, in South Bend, as Helen V. Sabaj, she married Alex J. Czajkowski. He died in 1964. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Kobiec of Austin, Texas, and Diane Lawson of North Liberty; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandson; five sisters, Stella Losinski of Bronson, Mich., Lottie Tomaszewski and Jean Rutkowski, both of South Bend, Jane Kass of Granger and Bernice Szilagyi of New Carlisle; and two brothers, Edward Sabaj and Thad Sabaj, both of South Bend. A daughter, Mary Ann McQueen, died Oct. 31, 1993. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County.
