Robert J. Pinkowski, 87, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:15a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Robert was born on June 30, 1919 in South Bend, to Frank and Grace (Short) Pinkowski. He was employed as the operations manager tor the South Bend Water Works for eight years; as a production control supervisor in the Aircraft Division of the Bendix Corp. for six years; was self employed as a regional coordinator with AFLAC; and was an Aerobic Pilot during the 1940's. On Aug. 7, 1943, in Santa Anna, CA, he married Rita J. Janowski, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mary Grace Zakowski of South Bend, IN; two sons, Charles (Cynthia) Pinkowski of South Bend, INand Stephen (Deborah) Pinkowski of Lawton, MI; eleven grandchildren, Bob and Amy Zakowski, Cari Anne, Jennifer, Charlie, Michael , Joey, and Mallory Pinkowski, Stephen and Stephanie Pinkowski, and Celeste Oppold; and by twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 1944 by a baby boy, Robert James Pinlowski, and his parents, Frank and Grace Pinkowski. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00a.m., Friday, March 2, 2007 in Little Flower Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 1 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Friends may call also for one hour prior to services at Little Flower Church on Friday. Robert was a member of Little Flower Parish. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Army from 1941-1942 and as a P-47 Thunderbolt Pilot in thw United States Army Air Corps from 1942-1945. Robert was also a member of the V.F.W. Golden Hill Post #8748 and a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council #553. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., or to the Little Flowers Church Building Fund.
