SOUTH BEND - Rita J. Pinkowski, 90, of South Bend, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012, in her home. She was born July 28, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Alex and Mary (Helak) Janowski. On August 7, 1943, as Rita Janowski, she married Robert J. Pinkowski, who preceded her in death on February 27, 2007. Rita is survived by her daughter, Mary Grace Zakowski of South Bend; her two sons, Charles (Cynthia) Pinkowski of South Bend and Steve Pinkowski of Paw Paw, MI; 11 grandchildren, Bob and Amy Zakowski, Cari Anne, Jennifer, Charlie, Michael, Joey, Mallory, Stephen and Stephanie Pinkowski, and Celeste Oppold; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lottie Kowalski of Enon, OH; and a brother, Marion Janowski of Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert James Pinkowski. Rita will also be remembered by many loved ones, in particular Jim and Mary Pat Russ and family, Elaine Pinkowski, Robert Zakowski Sr. and Kathleen Krebs. Rita was a parishioner of St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church in South Bend. She was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to garden and crochet, and made over 100 afghans for her family and friends. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Sunday, November 18, 2012, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Therese, Little Flower Church at 10 am Monday, November 19, 2012. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Foundation, 4220 Edison Lakes Parkway, Suite 210, Mishawaka, IN 46545-1440.
