EULOGY BY VINCE ZUBRAS

NOT ABOUT AN OLD FRIEND, BUT A
FRIEND OF AN OLD ACQUAINTANCE.

JOHN HOSINSKI

The life of every man is a diary, in which he means to write one story and then creates another. His humblest hour is when he compares the volume, as it is with what he hoped to make it.

JOHN HOSINSKI wrote only one story in his life. He did not have to relate it to anything else.

The true measure of a man is not how far he has traveled, but how high are the hills he had to climb. JOHN conquered mountains.

You can confiscate a man’s money but in the end, you’ve only acquired his material wealth. But when you take of an individual’s time, you’ve gained a part of his life.

We would like to thank you JOHN for giving us a part of your life.
JOHN you will recall the many friendly mental skirmishes we had in our long association. In those trying depression times, when jobs were not plentiful, and visions of attending college were completely out of reason.

In addition, Mr. Adolf Hitler was causing a lot of problems, which eventually led to World War II.

At that time we discussed our future and how long we had to live. We decided that whoever went first, the other one would have to give the eulogy. You also said that only the good die young, so true.

Today, I am keeping my part of the bargain and now I am going to give these friends “The rest of the story.”

Who was JOHN HOSINSKI? What did he do of earth moving consequences?

People wonder why there is such a disorganized life in today's world. I’ll tell you why we are having so many problems

WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF JOHN HOSINSKIS!

JOHN was born into a family that went through the depression era. He learned early in life that if you want the better things of life you will have to work and labor hard.

JOHN learned his lessons well.

In addition to developing a wonderful work and cooperative ethic, he also learned to love and respect his fellow man, regardless of race, color or creed.

His success in his military endeavors and life were self-evident and don’t need any embellishments.

He was a real Trojan, too, when it came to helping out when there was a need in a family, friend, or community effort. He was ready and willing to sacrifice for the common good.

Today, we inter his body but not his spirit or enthusiasm for life.

I am sure somewhere in his memoirs there is a note:

Dear God,
Thank you for
The love of friends.
Without them,
We could not exist.

The last time I saw John, I asked him what had 80 plus years on Earth taught him. He answered, “Remember that these four best things are free:"

Family
Friends
Smiles
And
Happiness.

As I look around the church today, the truth is self-evident. JOHN had friends in every environment.

The Lord Smiles And Does Things In Strange Ways.

There is no argument how well the Lord did when he arranged for JOHN to meet MARY.

Here were two different people but a perfect amalgam.

Unlike so many marriages today, JOHN kept his marital vows “Until death do us part.”

JOHN really enjoyed life. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He could take a ribbing but he was a master in his retorts. Never malicious, just friendly skirmishing. A most desirable trait lacking in so many individuals.

When the need arose, JOHN fulfilled his obligation to society and served in the Army to help preserve our way of life.

Our friendship goes back some 75 years, from our days at St. Hedwig’s Parochial school.

JOHN was born with an engineering mind.

One day he came up with the idea of taking a 55-gallon metal drum, and cutting out a hole for two young kids to fit in.

He designed a prow to keep the drum level.

Somewhere he got two small paddles, which I think he fashioned from a ping pong set, elongating them so we could propel this as a vessel.

We hauled that ship down to Leeper Park, on a wagon, and launched it on the St. Joseph River.

When we both got in that drum, the water level came within 3 inches of the opening and if we hit any waves, it was possible that the ship would sink.

Just as we got to the bridge a Police cruiser spotted us and the policeman whistled us down to the bank and threatened to put us in jail, if we didn’t abandon ship right then and there.

We had a lot of fun in those depression days, which the youth of today will never experience.

WHO WAS JOHN HOSINSKI? I THINK I KNOW, BECAUSE IT IS:

NOT HOW DID HE DIE?
BUT HOW DID HE LIVE?
NOT WHAT DID HE GAIN?
BUT WHAT DID HE GIVE?

THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT MEASURE THE TRUE WORTH OF A MAN AS A MAN REGARDLESS OF BIRTH.

NOT WHAT WAS HIS STATION?
BUT HAD HE A HEART?

AND HOW DID HE PLAY HIS GOD-GIVEN PART?
WAS HE EVER READY WITH A WORD OF GOOD CHEER
TO BRING BACK A SMILE,
TO BANISH A TEAR?
NOT WHAT WAS HIS CHURCH?
NOR WHAT WAS HIS CREED?
BUT HAD HE BEFRIENDED THOSE REALLY IN NEED?
NOT WHAT DID THE SKETCH IN THE PAPER SAY?
BUT HOW MANY MISSED HIM WHEN HE PASSED AWAY?

Knowing JOHN,

I think he is now saying.....to us all....

When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye
For all my life, I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for,
So much left yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays,
The good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for a while,
I'd say good-bye and kiss you
And maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized,
That this could never be,
For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.

JOHN, in closing, I would like to make a toast, an old Irish blessing:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always upon your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall softly upon your fields and,
Until we meet again......
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God Bless
