GRANGER - Elmo V. Vernasco, 88, passed away at 1:45 pm Saturday, August 15, 2015 in his home. He was born July 27, 1927 in Mishawaka to the late Theodore and Josephine (Bezi) Vernasco and remained a lifelong area resident. Elmo served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine. He worked with his father for many years at Mishawaka Body Shop. He was co-owner of Regal Lanes Bowling Center in Mishawaka and owner of Elmo's Stereo in South Bend for 36 years before retiring. On January 8, 1946 in South Bend, Elmo married the former Jean Davis. In addition to his loving wife of 69 years, he is survived by his son, Alan (Patty Napier) Vernasco; daughters, Karen (John) Wojtas and Nancy (Bob) Pellegrino, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one brother, Walter "Dado" Vernasco. Elmo loved his garden and growing tomato plants. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. But most importantly, Elmo loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, and will be greatly missed by them. Funeral services for Elmo will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 20, 2015 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Bill Meininger of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Wednesday in the funeral home as well as one hour prior to services on Thursday. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Elmo may be donated to Harbor Light Hospice, 1608 E. Day Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
