=============
Year of birth is approximate based on her age in her census records, which is consistent with the year inscribed on her gravestone.
On Nov. 23, 1873, Rev. D. J. Spillard, C. S. C., Pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, married Leonard Kalamayski (sic) & Mary Derkoska (sic). (image of original county marriage record, familysearch.org)
The 1880 census of South Bend indicates that Leonard Kalamajski, a laborer at a plow works, and his wife, Mary A. were both born in Prussia. Their household included her mother, Josephine Dorkoski (sic) born in Prussia, and their daughters (in birth order): Jennie, Brawna, Stanislawa, and Cashmerica, all born in Indiana.
According to the 1900 census of South Bend, Leonard Kalamajska had become a school teacher, he and his wife Mary had both immigrated in 1872, and had been married 26 years. She had had sixteen children, of whom eleven were living and living at home (in birth order): Wladyslawa/Lottie, Bronislawa, Stanislawa, Kazimiera, Alexander, Antoni, Wanda, Leonard, Jadwiga, Mary, and Zofia/Sophie, all born in Indiana.
Leonard died in 1907. His date and place of death are given in his Indiana death certificate for which Lottie Kalamajski was the informant. It was her understanding that he was 54, had been born in Poland to August & Mary (Piatkowski) Kalamajski.
At the time of the 1910 census of South Bend, Kazmiera, Mary, and Zofia Kalamajski were living with their mother Mary. The record indicates that she was a widow and that of her sixteen children, eleven were living.
By the time of the 1920 census, Mary and her daughter Casimere, who was a cigar maker in a factory, were living together.
Mary Kalamajski died in 1921. Her date and place of death are given in her Indiana death certificate for which Kazmiera Kalamajski was the informant. It was Kazmiera' understanding that Mary had been born on Nov. 11, 1858* in Poland to Anton & Josefa Derkowski.
*The South Bend News-Times had reported on Tues., Nov. 19, 1918, that the family of Mary Kalamajski had gathered on Sunday evening to celebrate her 61st birthday. If the newspaper had her age right and if Sunday was her actual birthday, then she was born on Nov. 17, 1857, not Nov. 11, 1858. Her age in her census records consistently indicates that she was born in 1857. The article also reported that her daughter, Mrs. Leon Niedbalski, had made the presentation speech, and that the other hostesses were Mrs. Henry Cjajkowski, Mrs. Wanda Niezgodzki, and Mrs. Joseph Raczynski.
