INDEX
[N9819]
The Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria was a crownland of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Austrian Empire, and Austria-Hungary from 1772 to 1918 (see Cisleithania). The name was given to the entire south-eastern part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772 upon its annexation during the First Partition of Poland, "ruler of Galicia and and Lodomeria" being among the many ceremonial titles of the princes of Hungary. The name "Galicia" is the Latinized form of Haylch, a principality of the medieval Rus, and was available because in 1714 the Habsburgs had lost an identically named province in northern Spain to the Bourbons in the War of the Spanish Succession. "Lodomeria", on the other hand, existed only on paper, had no territory, and could not be found on any map.
This historical region in Eastern Europe is divided today between Poland and Ukraine. The nucleus of historic Galicia consists of the modern Lviv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions of the western Ukraine.
