Mishawaka Enterprise Vital Statistics Index 1982 to 2003

This index is the third in a series of vital statistics indexes of the Mishawaka Enterprise and other local contemporary newspapers. The first index is a hardcover book of the same name, covering 1858-1981. The second index covers 1982-1992 and is currently under construction. The fourth index, covering 2004 to the present, is also under construction. This index also covers two short-run newspapers, the Mishawaka Monitor and the Walkerton Times.

The Mishawaka Monitor began publishing on April 8, 1993 and ended on February 9, 1995. Owned and edited by Mr. and Mrs. George Heiner, 3320 Lincoln Way East, Mishawaka, it claimed to be Mishawaka’s only locally-owned and operated newspaper. It claimed to be more liberal than the Mishawaka Enterprise and aimed to bring attention and coverage to Mishawaka and eastern St. Joseph County as well as encouraging people to read more newspapers.

The Walkerton Times included here comes from the microfilm collection of the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library, so coverage is limited to the microfilmed copies in that collection. The Times began with its June 15, 2000 issue and coverage ends with the December 26, 2002 issue. A newspaper which varied from 8 – 12 pages, it was owned and run by Jim and Dawn Christie of 613 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton. Its intent was to provide readers in the Walkerton area with more local coverage than otherwise available.

Use the index carefully and creatively. Some “See” and “See also” references are provided, but be sure to try alternate spellings. Unlike earlier indexes, the papers did not cover marriages and divorces as thoroughly as previously, so the coverage tends to be more limited to births and deaths.
