Obtaining copies of Marriage Records.

All requests for records must be placed through the Archives & Records Center. SBAGS does not hold any records.

The first marriage license book has been missing since 1948. The Schuyler Colfax Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in South Bend, compiled a book using newspapers, wills, deeds, cemeteries and 1850 censuses of St. Joseph, LaPorte, Elkhart, Marshall, and Lake Counties, Indiana and Berrien County, Michigan.

Book 2, the first license is dated November 17, 1838.

The Archives and Records Center continues to hold this collection of records dated to January 1989. Please note that applications do not start until April 1905. Archives and Records Center also holds Mishawaka marriages and licenses from September 1980 through February 1998.

In 1981 the Mishawaka Clerks Office started the Mishawaka marriages and applications. The first application date is September 9, 1980. (Marriage applications are good for 60 days.)
After February 1998 to the present, the marriages and applications for those dates are at the Mishawaka Clerks Office.
