Joseph N. Vittorie
March 27, 1921 - April 30, 2017
SOUTH BEND - Joseph N. Vittorie, 96, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:47 pm on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Center for Hospice Care in South Bend. He was born on March 27, 1921, in South Bend, to the late Louis and Mary (Rodino) Vittorie. On May 12, 1948, in LaPorte, IN, Joseph married the former Zelda R. Stafford, who preceded him in death on May 3, 1976. Joseph is survived by daughter, Judy (Larry) Warren of El Cajon, CA; sons, Louis “Sam” (Roseann) Vittorie of South Bend, and Joseph N. (Michelle) Vittorie of LaQuinta, CA; four grandchildren, Cameron and Courtney Warren, Noell (Matthew) Hostetler and Andrea (Jason) Smolinski; and great-grandchildren, Ryne and Louis Smolinski. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by sister, Rose Maio; and brothers, Frank “Sam” Vittorie and John Vittorie. Joseph served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as an assistant supervisor for St. Joseph County Highway Department, retiring in 1985 after forty years of employment. Joseph was such an avid Notre Dame fan that he built the picture window of his home to frame the Notre Dame Golden Dome. He loved old Western movies. In his youth, he enjoyed fishing. He spent the last few years of his life being given aid and comfort in his home of 64 years by immediate family members, especially his granddaughter, Noell. Funeral services for Joseph will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am - 1:00pm on Friday at the funeral home prior to services.
