Roger J. Beke
Oct. 1, 1927 - March 28, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Roger J. Beke, 82, of South Bend, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2010, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 1, 1927, in South Bend, to the late Roger C. and Marie (VanTornhout) Beke, and was a lifelong area resident. On May 2, 1953, he married Esther Simonis, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 56 years, he is survived his two daughters, Barbara Botka of South Bend and Diana (Michael) Meeks of Columbus, OH; three grandchildren, Marie, Claire and Joseph Meeks; a sister, Elinor (Richard) Logan of Creal Springs, IL; and a brother, Elmer (Sue) Beke of Pittsford, NY. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Sargeant, and by a son-in-law, Paul Botka. Mr. Beke retired from Bendix in 1990 after 45 years of service. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. Roger was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and was a member of American Legion Post #50, South Bend. Roger will be remembered as a man of honesty and integrity. He believed if you were going to do a job, then do it right! Roger loved his country and was a hard-working American; even in retirement he was "punching the clock" every morning. Roger was a voracious reader, historian, and completed crossword puzzles ever day - in ink! He enjoyed the outdoors and working in his yard, which was always well-manicured. Roger was devoted to his family: when they hurt - he hurt. He will be dearly missed by the family he cared for so much. Rest in peace Dad. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 31, 2010, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, in the funeral home, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or to the charity of the donor's choice. Published in South Bend Tribune on March 31, 2010
