Marlene A. Waltz Oct. 28, 1935 - Oct. 25, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Marlene A. Waltz, 78, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 8:55 a.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of South Bend, Marlene was born on October 28, 1935, to Leo and Martha (Vrient) Markiewicz. On October 3, 1964 in St. Casimir Church she married Robert L. Waltz. Robert and Marlene recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Survivors include her husband Robert; son, Larry (Christy) Waltz and children, Madison, McKenzie, and Maddox of New Carlisle, Indiana; and son, Joseph (Rachel) Waltz and daughters, Maya and Jillian of Osceola, Indiana; one brother, James (Donalee) Markiewicz of South Bend, Indiana; and her nieces and nephews, Lori Clements, Linda Markiewicz, Lisa Scott, and Michael Markiewicz. Marlene was a member of St. Jude Parish and loved St. Jude School where she was employed as a School Secretary for over 20 years. Marlene also performed many other services to the school including her favorite, lunch duty. She reluctantly took a leave in August 2014 from St. Jude School due to illness. Marlene enjoyed shopping, especially for her five grandchildren. She enjoyed and felt a great deal of pride in her grandchildren. She loved her sons and attended many of their sporting events over the years. She loved to watch her son Joe coach football at St. Joseph High School and her son Larry who coached football for St. Matthew's Grade School and currently coaches his daughter's softball team. Marlene was an avid animal lover. Homeless animals found a home with Marlene. She loved her outside cats and her adopted cat Tommy. When needs were noticed Marlene became a motherly figure to many people throughout her life. Marlene donated to many charities including Boystown, Catholic Charities, and the St. Joseph's Indian School. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in St. Jude Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. Friends may also visit with the family from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Jude Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to help defray medical expenses.
