PAPOI- Funeral services for Stephen A. Papoi Sr. 822 Kosciusko St., was injured fatally Sunday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a cement pillar on the Calumet Expressway near Harvey, Ill. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Zahoran Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Vegh, pastor of the Hungarian Assembly of God Church, will officiate with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetary. Mr. Papoi was born in Hungary Dec. 8, 1908, and had lived in South Bend 45 years, coming here from Hungary. He was employed as chief mechanic at the General Equipmemt & Machine Co., 511 E. Colfax Ave. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Anna Papoi: his widow, Esther; two sons, Stephen and Raymond; a daughter, Joyce Ann, all of South Bend, four brothers, Alex and Joseph, both of South Bend, and Anthony and Frank, both of Charlotte, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Varro of South Bend, and Mrs. Rose Delri of New Jersey. Friends may call in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Leo Jankowski, Joseph Scozinski, Lloyd Jelenski, Ray Samilski, Alex Papoi and Frank Tubiscak.

“Truck Driver Dies in Crash: Vehicle Hits Pole Along Calumet Expressway”
Stephen Papoi, 50, 822 Kosciusko St., was injured fatally Sunday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a cement pillar on the Calumet Expressway near Harvery, Ill. Papoi was dead on arrival at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Chicago, at 3:40 o'clock. Police said Papoi, headed south, apparently fell asleep. The car veered off the road and hit a pillar of the 159th St. overpass. The truck, which police said was demolished, was owned by the General Equipment & Machine Co., 511 E. Colfax Ave., where Papoi worked as a mechanic the last two years. Papoi was riding alone. The body will be brought to the Zahoran Funeral Home.
