SOUTH BEND - South Bend-Elmer Alric Van De Wielle, 86, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017, in South Bend. Elmer was born on June 11, 1930 in Mishawaka to Rene and Mary (Beiyuck) Van De Wielle. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-sister, his uncle, Michael Van De Wielle and aunt, Martha Rowlandts. Surviving is his loving wife of 65 1/2 years. On May 26, 1951 he married the former Lorraine Lambert. She was his caregiver, best friend and soul mate. They enjoyed many years of wonderful vacations, his most memorable vacation was when he and Lorraine visited his family for their 50 anniversary in Belguim, surviving are his sons, David (Sharon) Van De Wielle and Rene Van De Wielle; daughter, Mary (Bob) Means all of South Bend; grandchildren, Matt (Lindsay), Andrew, and Amy Van De Wielle and Kyle Means and Ashton (Drew) Gaugler; great grandchildren, Gabrielle and Annabelle Van De Wielle, Jackie (Tom) Simmons Schnellenberger, Jason (Meghan), Jackson, Jenna Schnellenberger and Claire (Reed), Amelia and Josephine Bailey and his stepmother, Marge Van De Wielle. Elmer was a Fireman for the South Bend Fire Department for over 31 years before he retired. He was also a Veteran of the Naval Reserves. He was a member of the BK and DeAmicis Clubs in Mishawaka. As per Elmer's wishes there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, March 11 at 11:00 a.m., with a gathering one hour prior in, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, South Bend. Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka has been entrusted with handling the final arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Heartland Hospice, 230 W. Catalpa Suite D, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or JDRF at jdrf.org. The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring nurses and staff from Heartland Hospice, Donna, Amy and Sally and Portage Place, Paul, Jennifer and Shareen for all their care.
