Apolonia Leda
8/13/1871 - 1959
Apolonia Leda was born in Poland on August 13, 1871. She had four brothers, all born in Poland, and residing in South Bend: Joseph, Stanislaus, Martin, and Wojciech, and a sister, Katherine in Chicago. She immigrated to the United States in 1887. Her ship manifest was poorly scanned with nearly illegible handwriting. She traveled alone in March 1887 on the ship Flamingo out of Hamburg, Germany and settled in South Bend. A license was granted on August 23, 1888 for Apolonia Leda and Michael Lodyga to marry. On August 27, 1888, they were joined in marriage by [then] Rector Valentine Czyzewski, C.S.C., St. Hedwig’s Church. The witness was William C. McMichael, Clerk of the St. Joseph County Circuit Court. On September 11, 1888, a certificate of marriage was filed and signed by Rector Krzyzewski, C.S.C to certify the marriage.Michael Lodyga was born in Poland on September 21, 1867 and immigrated to the United States about 1884 (note: his ship manifest has yet to be found). Michael settled in South Bend and led a quiet life working in various roles for local railroad companies. He was naturalized on September 11, 1925.
