George J. Labis Sr.
Feb. 22, 1922 - Sept. 25, 2007
SOUTH BEND - George J. Labis Sr., 85, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007. George Labis was born to the union of Anthony and Carrie (Poklimkowski) Labis. They preceded him in death along with brothers,Joe, Walter, Clem and Harry; sisters, Jean Pence, Cecilia Devos, Theresa Bates and Harriet Bogucki; a grandson, Brian Laskowski; step-great-grandson, Caleb Pittman; and a step-son-in-law, Dale Pittman. On October 31, 1942, he married Ethel (Eppie) Vida, who died on June 1,
1965. He then married Helen Karacson Buysee in February 1971. She died Nov. 3, 1990. George was employed by Studebaker, American Optical and C&B Optical from which he retired in 1991. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of American Legion Post 303, Disabled American Veterans and Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Surviving are two sons, George Labis Jr. of South Bend and Robert (Laura) Labis of Bloomington, IN; two daughters, Debbie (Alan) Duval of Dearborn, MI, and Gail Laskowski of South Bend; two stepsons, Jim Pare of Michigan and George Buysee of Florida; a stepdaughter, Dixie Pittman of Asheville, NC; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, especially a niece, Monica Brito of Arizona. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Memorial
contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care to Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. George will be sadly missed by all. The family would like to extend thanks to Stephanie and Bob from Hospice and all who work there with such care and compassion. Published in the South Bend Tribune on 9/28/2007.
