Jean Cecilia (Wojcik) Szewczyk, 98, passed away at 2:50a.m. Tuesday at Regency Place. Jean was born in Chicago, IL on March 18, 1912 to Michael and Angela Wojcik. She was Baptized and raised in Holy Trinity Parish and as an adult she belonged to and sang in the Choir at St. James Parish both in Chicago. On June 2, 1934 in Chicago she married Andrew Aloysius Szewczyk who passed away March 25, 1961. After graduating from high school she studied for a while intending to become a nurse. She was employed for more then thirty years as the Cashier and Treasurer at Continental Distributing in Chicago retiring in 1977. She loved knitting, cooking and in her later years spent many hours reading. Jean moved to South Bend seventeen years ago to be near her son and his family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame, IN. Mrs. Szewczyk is survived by her son Professor Albin A. (Barbara) Szewczyk of Granger; three grandchildren: Karen Knop of Indianapolis, Andrea Simpson and Teri (Paul) Sinka both of South Bend and thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is the last of six siblings and was predeceased by a granddaughter Lisa (Tim) Kruger of South Bend.A Mass of Christian Burial and her life was celebrated at 3:30 p.m., last Thursday in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame Campus. Friends called Thursday afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m., at McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., a half mile east of campus and from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. prior to mass in the Basilica. Following cremation at American Cremation Society, her ashes will be interred at St. Adalbert's Cemetery, Niles, IL this Tuesday at 2 p.m. Memorial donations in Jean's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Parish.
