SOUTH BEND - Edwin J. Nowak, 93, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 6:00 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013, in Signature Healthcare. Edwin was born on January 1, 1920, in South Bend, to John and Mary (Piska) Nowak. He retired from Commonwealth Life Insurance Company, where he was employed as an Insurance Agent. On June 1, 1946, Edwin married Agnes Reyniers, who preceded him in death on March 29, 1978. Also preceding him in death were a son, Edwin J. Nowak Jr.; granddaughter, Kristin Darby; six sisters and one brother. Edwin is survived by his son, David (Marilee) Nowak of South Bend, Indiana; four grandchildren, Nicholas Nowak, Nathaniel Nowak, Traci (Mark) Conte and Eryn Nowak; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur (Jeanie) Nowak of Mesquite, Nevada. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2013, in St. Anthony de Padua Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 until 11 a.m. on Monday in the church. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Edwin was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Parish and a former member of St. Adalbert Parish. He was a member of the Commonwealth Retirees Club. Edwin attended the University of Notre Dame. He was a W.W. II Army veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart. He volunteered for many years at St. Joseph Medical Center.
