"Pete" Hancz, 84, of Hudson Lake in New Carlisle, IN, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012, following a lengthy illness.He was born on September 5, 1927 to the late Joseph and Veronica (Hoffer) Hancz in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Pete has lived at Hudson Lake since 1952. Pete is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and three brothers. Mr. Hancz retired in 1984 from Arco Construction in Mishawaka, IN, where he worked as a Truck Driver for many years. On February 21, 1963, he married Diana J. Mroz in Newport Richey, FL. Pete is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Diana J. Hancz of Hudson Lake, IN; four daughters, Jennifer (Troy) Mireles of Hudson Lake, IN; Susan (Scott) Hughes of New Carlisle, IN; Sarah (James) Rogers of New Carlisle, IN; Laura (Peter) Falcone of Benton Harbor, MI; seven grandchildren, Cory, Cari, and Kaitlyn Hughes; Anthony, Sean, Karly, and Cody Rogers; one brother, Eugene (Doris) Hancz of South Bend, IN; and many nieces & nephews. Pete was a U.S. Army Veteran toward the end of World War II; and also served on the SS Charles D. Walcott while in the Merchant Marines.He loved fishing - but especially ice fishing, hunting, playing cards, checkers, horse shoes, refurbishing pontoon boats and boat motors for resale, and most of all spending time on Hudson Lake with his family. Pete was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it and was appreciated for his giving nature, by many. **NOTE, The time of visitation and Memorial service has changed. A Memorial Visitation will be from 11a.m.-12 noon Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN.Memorial Services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN, with Mike McGee officiating.
