John Joseph Hess, 85, passed away in Naples, FL, on October 5, 2022.He was born in South Bend, IN, on August 20, 1937, to Marquis and Irene (Meers) Hess. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary E (Kiser); brother, Thomas T. Hess; children, Terry (Mary), Julia, Dennis (Roxanne) and Peggy (Alan) Chell; “adopted” son, Mark (Janie) Thornton; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald D.; granddaughter, Desiree; and grandson, Nicholas Sherbun. He met the love of his life, Mary Kiser, at Diamond Lake. They married in 1956 and resided in Mishawaka. In 1960, he joined the Mishawaka Police Department retiring as a Captain in 1981. They moved to Naples, FL, where they owned numerous businesses and rental properties. He retired in 1992 and enjoyed life, traveling and summering in Waynesville, NC. He volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul, Haywood Christian Ministry and St. Ann’s Church where he ushered for many years. He was a life member of FOP Lodge 91 in Mishawaka, IN. His family is forever grateful to Avow for their compassion and dignified care. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place later at St Ann’s Church.
