[N16786] Harriet “Hattie” (Eftenoff) Verkler
Aug. 13, 1922 - May 19, 2017
WALKERTON- Walkerton- Harriet Verkler: age 94 passed away shortly before midnight on Friday, May 19th 2017 in Miller's Merry Manor. She was living independently in her own home up until very recently when heath complications required her to seek nursing care. Harriet was born on August 13th 1922 in Gary, Indiana to Dimitri and Nellie (Tepper) Eftenoff. She attended Lew Wallace High School and graduated in 1940. After graduation she moved to Walkerton to work in the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant. It was there that she met Dick Verkler, a fellow employee who worked on the same floor. The two fell in love and were married on July 18th 1942 in Crown Point. They had two children: Randy and Scott. During her marriage she was a homemaker and farm manager. After the death of her husband she spent many years working at Grovertown Truck Stop. She made countless friends and shared fond memories of her time spent there. Harriet was an avid reader. Some of her favorite authors included: Agatha Christie, Stuart Woods and James Patterson. Her favorite book was “Murder on the Orient Express”. Her love for books however did not match the love for her late husband Dick. It brings great comfort to her family members knowing that they are once again reunited and at peace. Mrs. Verkler was preceded in death by her parents: Dimitri and Nellie Eftenhoff, siblings: Rose, Wanda, Catherine and Thomas, husband: Joseph Richard “Dick” Verkler, son: Randolph “Randy” Verkler, niece: Paula Kruse and grandson: Bryan Verkler. Harriet is survived by her son: Scott (Christine) Verkler, daughter-in-law: Carolyn (late Randy) Verkler, grandchildren: Jessica (Tim) Verkler-Baker, Joseph Verkler and Brett Verkler, great grandchild: Kendalle Verkler, nieces and nephews: Janet, Laura, Jimmy and John also survive. As per Mrs. Verkler's wishes there will be no visitation. Family graveside services will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Walkerton. “Very few of us are what we seem” - Agatha Christie. The Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, 408 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton is in charge of arrangements. Published in South Bend Tribune on May 23, 2017
