Obituary: Florian J. Szuba
April 29, 1930 -- July 29, 2004
SOUTH BEND -- Florian J. Szuba, 74, of Prairie Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, July 29, in Goshen General Hospital.
Mr. Szuba was born on April 29, 1930, in South Bend, and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana area.
On April 22, 1950, in South Bend, he married the former Geraldine H. Gorka, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Rosemary Lancaster of Niles, Mich., and Kathy (Ron) Atkins of Porter, Texas; three sons, Floyd J. (Cheryl) Szuba of North Liberty, Ind., John (Carol) Szuba of Bremen, Ind., and Jim (Debbie) Szuba of South Bend; a sister, Evelyn Whitaker of Tacoma, Wash.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom he loved and cherished.
Florian was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Angela Szuba; one sister, Genevieve Strozewski; and by two brothers, Adam and Edward Szuba.
Mr. Szuba retired in 1979 from the South Bend Police Department after 24 years of service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always placed his family first. He was a member of FOP Lodge #36 and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Aug 2, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, Aug. 2. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, in Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Bernard Galic officiating. Entombment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery.
The family request that all memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Elkhart County, 2901 E. Bristol St., Suite C, Elkhart, IN 46514.
The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy to the Szuba family.
