He was born the youngest of two sons, in Oak Park, IL, to Lane K. and Helene (Haden) Newberry. After attending the Public Elementary School of Downers Grove, IL from 1934-1943, he graduated from the Community High School of Downers Grove, IL in 1947. While attending college, he joined the Illinois National Guard for one year earning the rank of Sergeant First Class. In 1953, he received a BA from North Central College in Naperville, IL, and then taught in the Downers Grove Public Schools Elementary District through June of 1958. In October of 1958, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in Watertown, WI, professing first vows in January of 1960 and making his perpetual profession in October of 1963. From 1960 through 2003, he worked in a wide variety of ministries: elementary education and administration; high school teaching in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin; and in pastoral ministry on a Native American reservation in South Dakota. In 1982, he was appointed the principal of St. Patrick High School in Monrovia, Liberia until 1989. He also mentored at-risk adolescents and recovering alcoholics and worked as an admissions counselor for senior citizens at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN. Brother James also served as either a director or superior of several Holy Cross ministries: St. Charles Boys Home, Milwaukee, WI, Columba Hall, Notre Dame, IN and André House in Oakland, CA. From 2003 through 2020 he was a resident at Columba Hall. Because of failing health, he lived his final years in Dujarié House at Holy Cross Village. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Charles Newberry, and he is survived by several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023, at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College from 10:00 to 11:00 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
