SOUTH BEND - Walter J. Gromski, 94, passed away, Tuesday, February 2, 2016, in Memorial Hospital. Walter was born March 24, 1921, in Joliet, Illinois, to the late Jan and Frances (Mrozek) Gromski. On June 22, 1946, in South Bend, Walter married Mildred (Bystry) Gromski, who preceded him in death on July 25, 2008. Walter was also preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Gromski; granddaughter, Jennifer Matthews; brothers and sister, Bill, Henry and Helen; and son-in-law, Daryl Matthews. Survivors of Walter include his children, James (Pam) Gromski of South Bend, Susan Matthews of Niles, MI; 4 grandchildren, Amy (Luke) Sheehan, Jason, Mark and Nick (Tina) Gromski; 2 great-grandchildren, Evan and Hannah Sheehan; and daughter-in-law, Linda Gromski.Walter honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II, in the AIB Infantry, 482nd AAA SP Weapons. He retired from the Post Office after 27 years. Walter was a parishioner of Holy Family Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #357. Walter was an avid fisherman, enjoyed wood carving, oil painting, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling and spent winters in Sebring, Florida.Visitation for Walter is 11 am to 1 pm Saturday, February 6, 2016, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., with a Funeral Ceremony to begin at 1 pm. Entombment will follow at St Joseph Cemetery.
